SEED FARMS

Department of Agriculture maintains 36 Seed farms in the State. The main objective of these Seed farms is to produce foundation seeds of important crops from the breeder seeds obtained from the research stations of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and Dharwar. Foundation seeds produced in the Seed farms under the supervision of certification inspectors of Karnataka State Seeds certification Agency, are procured by Karnataka State Seeds Corporation and processed in their processing centres . Seeds are further multiplied as certified seeds in the fields of registered seed growers. Thus, seed farms act as an important link in the seed production chain.

During 1999-2000 , a quantity of 1888.96 quintals of various foundation seeds has been produced over an area of 607.81 hectares. Besides,a quantity of 1698.35 quintals of certified seeds has been produced over an area of 428.83 hectares. Seeds produced during Rabi / Summer is under various stages of processing.

During 2000-2001, it is programmedd to produce 8025 quintals of various foundation seeds in an area of 1040 ha.
