Rainfall:
Three climatic classes are found in the State i.e. Arid, Semi-arid and humid. The mean annual rainfall varies from 400 mm. in the Eastern parts to more than 4000 mm. in the Western ghats and Coastal beach of the State. Average annual rainfall is 1139 mm. The same is received in two currents namely South-West monsoon (June-September) and North-East Monsoon (October-December). Normal rainfall for Kharif, Rabi and Summer is of the order of 930 mms, 195 mms and 14 mms, respectively.
Annual rainfall pattern analysed over a period of 39 y ears (1960-61 to 1998-99) indicates that, it was deficit in 8 years. During 1960s rainfall was deficit in two years, in 1970s only one year and was deficit for 3 years and 2 years, during 1980s and 1990s, respectively.
When the pattern was analysed for Kharif season, it was observed that the rainfall was deficit for 10 years out of 39 years. During 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, it was deficit during 2 years, one year, 4 years and 3 years, respectively.
In case of Rabi season, it was observed that rainfall was deficit for 19 years out of 39 years. During 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, it was deficit for 4, 5, 8 and 2 years, respectively.
