In case of Forests, land put to non-agricultural operations, current fallow and net area sown, there had been considerable increase in extent. This was due to decrease in area in case of barren and uncultivable land, cultivable wastes, permanent pastures, trees and groves and other fallows.

Total gross cropped area increased from 111.51 lakh hectares (1982-83) to 123.53 lakh hectares (1996-97), an increase of about 11%. Cropping intensity also increased to 116% (1996-97) from 108% (1982-83).
